In her 91 years, Aleksandra Kozhevnikova survived Stalinist Russia, served the allied war effort as a teenager in the 1940s, suffered the death of a child, taught special needs children and eventually came to Canada 12 years ago, where she has lived an independent and healthy life. At least she did until last April 23, when a van plowed into pedestrians on Yonge St. , taking the elderly widow and grandmother down in one of the most devastating and deadly attacks Canada has ever witnessed. When the rented van finally stopped, 10 people were dead and 16 others were seriously injured. Alek Minassian, 26, has been charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder. The attack left Kozhevnikova in a wheelchair and requiring physical and psychological care that AIG Insurance — the insurer of Ryder Truck Rental Canada Ltd., the company that rented the van to Minassian — has largely declined to pay. The insurer had an in-house investigator dig into Kozhevnikova’s benefit claims and hired … [Read more...] about Insurer withholds payment to cover care for Toronto van attack victim

Investors lukewarm on Tesla’s $1.5 billion bitcoin splurge
Investors in high-flying electric carmaker Tesla Inc are questioning whether Elon Musk's $1.5 billion outlay into bitcoin will be as good for the company as it has been for the cryptocurrency . Tesla's disclosure on Monday that it had moved nearly 8% of its reserves into bitcoin sent the price of the cryptocurrency to all-time highs, up more than 16% this week, while Tesla's shares are down nearly 6%. Others may follow Tesla's lead, with Twitter Inc's chief financial officer telling CNBC that the company has considered adding bitcoin to its balance sheet. Shareholders voiced concern that the investment by Tesla, which recently joined the benchmark S&P 500 stock index, could fuel more gyrations in the company's shares. "It will add volatility to the stock due to exposure to bitcoin," said King Lip, chief strategist at Baker Avenue Wealth Management, whose firm has owned Tesla shares since 2015. "This is better for bitcoin than it is for Tesla." Gary Black, former … [Read more...] about Investors lukewarm on Tesla’s $1.5 billion bitcoin splurge
Wall Street sets record closing highs on stimulus hopes, vaccine deployment
NEW YORK: Wall Street reached all-time closing highs on Monday as investor optimism was stoked by prospects of a speedier economic recovery from the global health crisis, driven by increased stimulus and an accelerated vaccine rollout. All three major U.S. stock indexes gained ground, with the S&P 500 and the Dow posting their sixth consecutive gains, their longest winning streak since August. Small-caps, set to benefit most from the economic rebound, outperformed their larger peers. "Investors are starting to play the economy opening up and the vaccine starting to work," said Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Kingsview Asset Management in Chicago. "And maybe they can go to a baseball game this summer." Still, the extended rally provides some cause for concern. "Stocks have been over-valued for much of the past year," Nolte added. "And the things we're seeing now, with GameStop and Bitcoin, those are signs of speculation, not investing." Oil prices rose to their … [Read more...] about Wall Street sets record closing highs on stimulus hopes, vaccine deployment
Russia names figure skating worlds team; Yelizaveta Tuktamysheva oldest in 14 years
Yelizaveta Tuktamysheva grabbed the last spot on Russia’s three-woman team for the world figure skating championships and is set to become the first non-teen to compete in women’s singles at worlds for the nation since 2013. Russia named its roster for worlds — in Stockholm in three weeks — after a domestic competition this past weekend. It’s led by three-time reigning national champion Anna Shcherbakova , a 16-year-old set for her senior worlds debut. Another 16-year-old, Aleksandra Trusova , all but wrapped up the second spot by placing third at nationals in December (and second among skaters old enough for senior worlds). Tuktamysheva, 24 and the gold medalist at her last worlds in 2015, was seventh at nationals in December. But she was fourth among skaters age-eligible for worlds (and just .38 of a point behind the third age-eligible skater). At last weekend’s Russian Cup Final, Tuktamysheva placed fourth. But the top three finishers are all 14 years old, and thus too … [Read more...] about Russia names figure skating worlds team; Yelizaveta Tuktamysheva oldest in 14 years
Polish discus thrower Malachowski calls for postponement
WARSAW: Officials should consider postponing this year's Tokyo Olympic Games because of the coronavirus epidemic to protect the health of athletes, twice Olympic silver medal-winning discus thrower Piotr Malachowski said on Friday. "If these games get postponed and will take place this year in November or December, this will definitely be much better for athletes. They'll be able to prepare," Poland's Malachowski told Reuters. Countries including Colombia and Slovenia have called for the Games to be postponed if the coronavirus epidemic persists. Others have said they should go ahead, with the foreign ministers of South Korea, China and Japan expressing support for Tokyo to host a complete Olympics. Malachowski, ranked fifth on the all-time list of discus throws, said he was being forced to adapt to coronavirus restrictions, training in parking lots and in his garden. The 36-year-old, Olympic silver medallist in 2008 and 2016, said under current conditions many athletes … [Read more...] about Polish discus thrower Malachowski calls for postponement
