The man, who was identified by the Springfield Police Department as being in his twenties, was dressed in body armor and military fatigues and carrying a firearm. Legalise online alcohol sales to help Russians self-isolating amid coronavirus – top banker
MOSCOW: One of Russia's top bankers wants online alcohol sales legalised to help people who are self-isolating because of the coronavirus. German Gref, the chief executive of Sberbank, has started a mandatory two weeks in self-isolation after returning from abroad. But during a videoconference news briefing on Tuesday, he said he believed medicines that are available over-the-counter and alcohol should be made available for purchase online to help people self-isolating avoid going out to shops or pharmacies. "I hope this will be decided soon and that people will not have to go to shops and pharmacies," he said. Shortly after Gref spoke, President Vladimir Putin announced that over-the-counter medication would be made available for online purchases but made no mention of alcohol. Russia has recorded 114 coronavirus cases and foreign nationals have been banned from entering the country until May to try to prevent the virus spreading. Tech must be regulated like tobacco, says Cambridge Analytica whistleblower
PARIS: Facebook and other tech companies need to be regulated like the tobacco industry, warned Christopher Wylie, the whistleblower who exposed the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The data scientist revealed how he helped the disgraced company, founded by Donald Trump's former right-hand man Steve Bannon, to use unauthorised personal data harvested from Facebook to help swing a string of elections, including Trump's US presidential win in 2016. READ: Cambridge Analytica: Firm at the heart of Facebook scandal Despite Facebook being fined a record US$5 billion (S$6.9 billion) in the US last year for "deceiving" users about keeping their information safe, Wylie said the world has yet to wake up to the consequences of the scandal. "If we want to prevent another Cambridge Analytica from happening ... that starts with regulating big tech beyond just data protection issues, but also looking at whether or not we want as a society to tolerate manipulative design," he insisted. Rising food costs lift US consumer prices in February
WASHINGTON: U.S. consumer prices unexpectedly rose in February but are likely to decline in the months ahead as the coronavirus outbreak depresses demand for some goods and services, outweighing price increases related to shortages caused by disruptions to the supply chain. The report from the Labor Department on Wednesday also showed a steady rise in underlying inflation last month. Financial markets expect the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates again at its policy meeting next week. The U.S. central bank implemented a 50-basis-point emergency rate cut last Tuesday as the fast-spreading coronavirus fanned fears of a recession in the U.S. and global economies. The Labor Department said its consumer price index increased 0.1per cent last month, matching January's gain, as rising food and accommodation costs offset cheaper gasoline. In the 12 months through February, the CPI rose 2.3per cent. That followed a 2.5per cent jump in January, which was the biggest year-on-year … [Read more...] about Rising food costs lift US consumer prices in February
