NEW DELHI/LUCKNOW: Samsung Electronics should get tax and other incentives from Uttar Pradesh as the South Korean company looks to invest some 53.67 billion rupees (US$705.75 million) in a smartphone display manufacturing plant in the state, India's lead investment promotion body said in a letter. Samsung, one of the top smartphone sellers in India, signed a memorandum of understanding with Uttar Pradesh in 2019 on the project. A source familiar with the matter said this would relocate manufacturing previously done in China. The letter, seen by Reuters, was sent to Uttar Pradesh's state government by Invest India in April. Reuters could not determine if the promotion body discussed the letter with Samsung. The Korean company and Invest India did not respond to requests for comment. Samsung expects to create some 1,300 jobs at the plant, the letter said. The facility is likely to begin operations in 2021, the source said. The state has now seen 382,703 cases and 7,697 deaths as we approach the anniversary of the first confirmed cases in Maryland. The state’s calculation of the positivity rate rose slightly to 3.52% with 19,263 tests conducted in the last 24 hours. Maryland is still in Phase 1C, with 1,332,588 doses administered so far. In the last day, 15,781 first doses and 9,863 second doses have been administered. Layoffs top 44 million in US as COVID-19 resurgence hits Wall Street
WASHINGTON, DC: Layoffs caused by the coronavrius pandemic reached 44.2 million in the United States even as businesses try to reopen, with analysts warning of continuing damage to the world's largest economy as COVID-19 shows few signs of abating. Wall Street stocks plunged at the start of trading on Thursday (Jun 11), reversing recent gains as traders became spooked by resurgent virus cases in parts of the country and new Labor Department data showed another 1.54 million workers putting in unemployment benefit claims last week. Such massive layoffs have become routine since shutdowns to stop the coronavirus from spreading began in mid-March, reaching their peak later that month and declining since. Nonetheless, this week's total is still well above any figure seen during the global financial crisis in 2008.
