Looking for killer whales and hiking up a volcano in Seattle – California’s got competition

· September 11, 2019 ·

On a recent trip to Seattle, I kept hearing the same phrase repeated over and over again. “It doesn’t rain that much here,” rang the chorus line. The locals, apparently, were keen to dispel the myth that their beloved city is in a perpetual state of deluge. “If you think Seattle, you think rain,” explained Rand Rogers, a Seattleite based in Singapore since 2012. For the record, it rains only about 150 days a year in Seattle (Singapore had 188 days of rain in 2018, by comparison). Indeed, for the four days I spent in the city – a journey made easier thanks to Singapore Airlines ’s (SIA) new non-stop flight – I was blessed with sunshine and blue skies. Regardless whether you love or hate downpours, the precipitation does have one major upside: It makes everything lush. Seattle isn’t called the Emerald City for nothing. From green urban spaces to National Parks, the greenery is an attraction unto itself. Perhaps most famous of all is Mount Rainier National Park, anchored … [Read more...] about Looking for killer whales and hiking up a volcano in Seattle – California’s got competition

The rise of the ‘quantified self’

· October 29, 2014 ·

The term “ Quantified Self ” was coined in 2007 by Wired editors Gary Wolf and Kevin Kelly, who organized a meetup of 30 people. Today, the group has grown to include more than 20,000 members in 188 cities. The rise of the quantified self movement means we're all living by numbers. In the past, industries harped on understanding consumers and measuring their behavior — today, consumers themselves are tracking and generating enormous amounts of data. Before things like smartphones or wearables, we’d have to consult doctors or data technicians or manually log activities to determine how many calories we consume and burn. But now, with Fitbits , Fuelbands , Jawbones and Whistles (even our dogs are tracking activity!), we can capture this data in a snap, see it updated in real time and use it to make better, more healthy decisions. PSL 2021: Karachi Kings need 189 to win against Peshawar Zalmi

· March 3, 2021 ·

Karachi Kings require 189 runs to beat Peshawar Zalmi in the match 13 of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Peshawar were asked to bat first by Karachi Kings after Imad Wasim won the toss on a pitch favouring the teams chasing the target. Peshawar were looking to set a below par score after they lost three wickets in the powerplay at just 39 runs. Kings were in command at the end of 10th over when Peshawar were 69/4 and had lost Haider Ali just when he was looking to charge. However, an 82-run partnership between West Indian Shane Rutherford and Englishman Ravi Bopara had taken the game away from the opposition. Rutherford fell to Mohammad Ilyas in the 18th over but by that time the stage was set for Amad Butt to propel the Peshawar Zalmi to 188. The all-rounder hit Dan Christian for 32 runs in the last over to help his side put up a defendable total. … [Read more...] about PSL 2021: Karachi Kings need 189 to win against Peshawar Zalmi

Huawei’s Play Store competitor is doing better than you think

· March 2, 2021 ·

Something's going right Cut off from Google, Huawei has had to go it alone. Michael Allison 2 Mar 2021 2 Source: Alex Dobie / Android Central What you need to know Huawei has been cut off from Google for the past two years. The company developed its App Gallery as a replacement for the Google Play Store. Huawei this month announced strong continued growth of the App Gallery. Despite the lack of Google support for its phones, Huawei is still here and making some of the best Android phones we've seen, when it comes to hardware at least. The company had been forced to build out its own App Gallery, a Play Store replacement, to even compete in the smartphone market. There are few signs that it's doing much to stop the bleeding, and rumors are swirling about Huawei jettisoning its flagship lines . Still, the company today shared news of the uptake of its AppGallery over the past year, and it's a growing business. Huawei says that … [Read more...] about Huawei’s Play Store competitor is doing better than you think
