From Prime Minister Theresa May wiping tears from her face on the steps of Downing Street as she resigned from the post, to the funeral of Zimbabwean politician Robert Mugabe, Reuters has released some of the most captivating images of the last year. The poignant selection of photos captures the historic events of a turbulent 2019 and further sets the stage for the events to come in the coming year. 2019 was an emotional year for many, and the images really manage to capture the feelings of those who were caught up in protests in Hong Kong, while others capture the triumph of sporting successes of the US women’s football team and Tiger Woods scooping the 2019 Masters. Natural disasters enabled communities and countries to come together this year, as many were displaced due to flooding in places such as South Sudan. Places that were also hit by the ever-changing climate included Brazil, where the Amazon rain forest was ravaged by fire. In other extremes, roads in Russia were completely covered with ice, forcing motorists to drive along a five-kilometre road over the Yenisei River.
