‘Data leak at SBI’: Kerala HC slaps Rs 10,000 fine for frivolous PIL

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on a person who filed a frivolous public interest litigation (PIL) alleging security lapse in the banking operations of State Bank of India (SBI). A division bench comprising chief justice Hrishikesh Roy and justice AK Jayasankaran Nambiar ordered Shaheer Ali alias Shaheer Chingath of Tirurkad in Malappuram to pay the fine for filing the PIL (WP-C No. 3594/2019) alleging that serious lapses by SBI resulted in leaking of customer data and disruption of online banking service. The PIL was filed by Shaheer as coordinator of National Council for Peoples Right to Information, and had sought investigation by an independent agency. A court directive to the general manager of SBI to remit Rs 5 crore to Kerala State Legal Services Authority (KELSA). In a counter affidavit filed through senior advocate George Thomas Mevada, SBI stoutly denied the allegation that there was leakage of customer data maintained by it. Details of customers are fully secure in the servers maintained by SBI and there are enough inbuilt safeguards in the conveyance of data for banking transactions, SBI told the court while terming the allegations in the PIL as false and irresponsible….
