Highlights of last month’s first-ever U.S. championship in sport climbing’s Olympic format will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 2 p.m. PST on Feb. 3. Sport climbing is one of five sports added to the Olympic lineup for the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo. Climbers will compete in all three of the sport’s major disciplines: — Lead climbing (sometimes called “difficulty”). Climbers protected by a rope try to get as far as possible on walls often 60 feet high. — Bouldering. On shorter walls with no rope protection. Climbers can take multiple attempts in a set amount of time, usually four minutes, to reach the top of the wall. — Speed climbing. Climbers race head-to-head on 50-foot walls. The competition in the ESPN program, Jan. 18-19 in Salt Lake City, was the first event leading toward next year’s selection of the U.S. Olympic competitors.
