SPRINGFIELD — Hundreds of area residents will perform in honor of slain civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. as part of the seventh annual Dr. King Day Celebration here. The two-hour event, whose theme is ”In the Words of Dr. King,” will take place on Monday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. at the MassMutual Center in downtown Springfield. Jan. 21 is federal holiday honoring King. King was a Baptist minister and activist who became a leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 until his assassination in 1968. This free, public event is a collaborative celebration hosted by Martin Luther King Jr. Family Services, Community Music School of Springfield, DREAM Studios Inc. and Springfield College. “The Springfield MLK Day Celebration is one of the largest celebrations of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King across the commonwealth, an event that annually brings together 3,000 guests, performers and distinguished community leaders,” said Eileen M. McCaffery, executive director of Community Music School of Springfield.
