New Jersey lawmakers are considering a ban on pet leases that advocates say are deceptive and undermine the “lifetime commitment” of pet ownership.The bill (A4552) was approved by the Assembly Consumer Affairs Committee last week and if signed into law would levy steep fines against pet stores or breeders that lease cats or dogs.“Families fall in love with a dog or cat that they can’t afford, and the breeders sign them up for a payment plan,” Assemblyman Kevin Rooney, R-Bergen, a bill sponsor, said in a statement. “The lease can double or triple the cost, and with some dogs going as high as $5,000, it can add up fast. Families can suffer a serious financial hit, and if they miss a payment, the family pet can be repossessed.”Three states — California, Nevada and New York — already ban such leases.Bon Jovi feeds furloughed federal workersBrian Hackett, state director of The Humane Society of the United States, said pet leases are predatory and confusing, with many hidden costs.
