Think ‘workforce shortage,’ and high-tech companies struggling to find enough engineers might come to mind. However, reversing a decades-long trend, companies are now having a more difficult time finding blue-collar employees than white-collar workers. According to a recent analysis by the Conference Board, the newly-emerged shortage of blue-collar laborers will continue in 2019 and beyond. Companies can expect tougher times recruiting workers in sectors that include transportation, health care support, manufacturing, agriculture, mining and construction, says the group’s report. MORE: Employers in Shasta County & Redding have holiday jobs That news comes as the North State is looking to hire crews to rebuild after the Carr Fire wiped out nearly 1,100 homes in Shasta County this summer and the deadly Camp Fire wasted close to 14,000 homes more than an hour away in Butte County last month. Several factors are contributing to the rising blue collar worker shortage, according to the study. More people are getting bachelor’s degrees and heading to other opportunities.
