Call the boss of O2 anything, just don’t call him a blindside flanker. One of the greatest regrets in Mark Evans’ life is that he never made the grade in top-flight rugby. Instead, despite being six-foot-five with the lean physique of the five-times-a-week gym addict, he just has to cheer his beloved Wales from the terraces. But that’s not the worst of it. Since becoming chief executive of O2 two years ago, he’s had to grin when England win, because his present employer has, since 2002, been the sponsor of our national team. It’s sensitive. “With a surname like Evans, rugby is in the blood,” he says. “I would have loved to have been a blindside flanker for Wales but the talent just wasn’t there. As it is, I now sponsor England and get a lot of ridicule and heckle instead.” Though he played enough rugby and cricket to damage his grades at his sporty Porstmouth comprehensive school, he hasn’t done so badly, having climbed his way to the top of the tree at Britain’s second-biggest mobile network.
