Viettel appoints new general director By Van Ly Le Dang Dung, new chairman and general director of Viettel – PHOTO: VAN LY HANOI – Le Dang Dung, deputy general director of military-run telecom firm Viettel, has been picked as chairman and general director of the group. He succeeds Major General Nguyen Manh Hung, member of the Party Central Committee, who has assumed the posts of secretary of the Party Committee of the Ministry of Information and Communications, acting minister of information and communications and deputy head of the Ideology and Education Commission of the Central Party Committee. Dung also serves as secretary of the executive board of Viettel’s Party Committee and leader of Viettel’s subsidiary Viettel Global. Viettel remains Vietnam’s leading telecom firm, with significant sales from overseas investments. Viettel’s revenue from its offshore operations soared by 31% in 2017 to US$233 million, or some VND5,300 billion, compared with 2016. Last year, the telecom firm’s growth rate of offshore investments reached 24.4%, the highest ever and six times higher than the average global rate. The Vietnamese telecom provider has invested in 10 international markets. The group is listed among the top 15 largest telecom providers in the world in terms of the number of subscribers and among the top 40 in terms of revenue.
