“Tangkilin ang sariling atin” is a statement we hear often but not all live by it, even concerning our source of entertainment. Hollywood movies still dominate the box office in the Philippines to the point that local producers avoid showing their movies in the same weeks as the big flicks from the West. Still, the National Committee on Cinema (NCCinema) continues to push for greater appreciation of Pinoy movies. In an interview, NCCinema executive Archie Adamos praised the current crop of Filipino films. He specifically pointed to regional films as “nagpapakita ng ating pagkakakilanlan bilang mga Pilipino.” “Sa kabuuan nito, pati rin pagkakakinlalan mula sa ating iba’t-ibang rehiyon,” he said, adding, “Maraming pelikula na pang-rehiyon na hindi lang nabibigyan ng tamang pagkilala pero masasabi mo na talagang maganda at makabuluhan.” NCCinema vice head Teddy Co echoed the notion, adding that while Visayan films might not be appreciated by the Mindanaoans and vice versa, “we can create a cinema fellowship in due time.” “As Filipino moviegoers become more sophisticated, become more meticulous with their viewing habits, people most likely will appreciate the films from different region and that is the full gamut of what Filipino cinema is.” He advises Filipino filmmakers… Read full this story
