Screening of documentary film about Dai Lam Linh By Thanh Hang in HCMC A premiere screening of the documentary film “Hanoi Eclipse: The Music of Dai Lam Linh”, directed by Barley Nortonwill, will be introduced at Cinematheque at 22A Hai Ba Trung in Hanoi City’s Hoan Kiem District at 7.30 PM on July 24. It shows how the band came together to create a unique form of popular music, which is international in outlook while rooted in Vietnamese traditions and aesthetics. With vivid footage to depict a portrait of the contemporary band that dares to violate taboos by exploiting experimental sound and sexual explicit lyrics, the film also provides a deep insight into the contemporary music scene in Hanoi. Barley Norton is a senior lecturer in the music department at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he teaches world music and ethnographic film. A specialist in Vietnamese music and culture, he is the author of a book and DVD titled Songs for the Spirits: Music and Mediums in Modern Vietnam (University of Illinois Press, 2009). The documentary Hanoi Eclipse: The Music of Dai Lam Linh, which was funded by the Getty Foundation, is Barley’s directorial debut.Free tickets are available at Cong Café at 152D Trieu Viet Vuong, Hanoi before the screening date.
