In Phoenix, an artist’s birds are reborn, soaring over the Roosevelt Row neighborhood

Lauren Lee moves her paintbrush across the canvas in small strokes until the arc of a wing and the veins of a feather form on the white silhouette of a bird.She twists her torso, shifts her weight and steps back. Observing. Is this right?Lee is an artist who draws what moves her. She is comfortable not always knowing why she picks a certain color or shape. As she paints, she is certain about one thing: What she is creating, making with her own hands and vision, does not really belong to her.”Someone has to live with it,” she says, squinting until a fine web of lines gathers at the corners of her eyes. “Every day.”On a sweaty-hot Wednesday in August, Lee is alone in the studio she shares with painters, sculptors and other artists at Oasis on Grand apartments in the Phoenix arts district.The studio is a space where creations are born.
