PANO – President Tran Dai Quang had meetings on the afternoon of June 15th with Senate President Say Chhum, National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrin and Prime Minister Hun Sen.
In the meetings with Senate President Say Chhum and National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrin, the Vietnamese President expressed his delight at paying this state-level visit to Cambodia and witnessing the great and proud achievements attained over the past years by the brotherly Cambodian people in the reign of King Norodom Sihamoni and under the sound leadership of the Cambodian Parliament and Government. President Tran Dai Quang also wished the Cambodian people more success and that the country would become more developed and prosperous in the years to come.
The Vietnamese President thanked the Cambodian King, Parliament, Government and people for the warm reception for him, his spouse and the Vietnamese delegation. He affirmed that the Party, State and people of Vietnam always attach much importance to strengthening its bilateral relationship with Cambodia and will do their utmost to bolster the traditional friendly good neighborhood, unity and multi-faceted cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia. The Vietnamese President also passed the regards of Vietnamese General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and other former and incumbent leaders to the two Cambodian parliamentary leaders.
Mentioning the traditional friendly neighborhood, unity and mutual support between the two nations, Senate President Say Chhum and National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrin said the Cambodian people will never forget the sacrifices made by Vietnamese volunteer soldiers to save Cambodia from the genocidal regime with the historic victory on January 7, 1979. The blood and bones and contribution of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers are invaluable. They suggested the two countries should continue their education activities on the tradition and history for young generations so that they will forever understand the value and significance of the friendly relationship and unity between the two nations. The two leaders of the Cambodian legislature sent their greetings and regards to Vietnamese General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and other leaders and believed that Vietnam will reach more achievements in its national industrialization and modernization under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
Reviewing bilateral relations and cooperation, the two sides expressed joy over recent positive developments in the friendly relationship and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries and legislative bodies. National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrin highly valued the close ties between the two National Assemblies at both bilateral and multilateral levels, including regional and international inter-parliamentary forums. President Tran Dai Quang held that the two countries should strengthen unity and friendship in the regional and global complex context to deserve the sacrifices of the previous generations and to meet the aspirations and expectations of the two nations. In such a spirit, both sides agreed to hold activities celebrating the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-Cambodia diplomatic ties (June 24, 2017), considering it a chance to raise awareness of the two countries’ younger generations of the traditional friendship, cooperation and mutual support between the two nations.
At the meeting with Prime Minister Hun Sen, President Tran Dai Quang congratulated the head of the Cambodian Government on the great and proud achievements of the Cambodian people under the reign of King Norodom Sihamoni and under the sound leadership of the Government with its significant composition of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) chaired by Prime Minister Hun Sen. The Vietnamese President believed that the CPP and the Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen will take the country on the way toward development and prosperity in the coming years.
For his part, Prime Minister Hun Sen warmly welcomed the Vietnamese President to Cambodia and highly appreciated the significance of his state-level visit to the country. He highlighted the visit as a historical landmark that would contribute to bolstering friendly relations and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries. On this occasion, the Cambodian Prime Minister thanked the Party, State and people of Vietnam for their past assistance and support in saving the nation and preventing the genocide regime from returning to power in the country. He reaffirmed that without the historic victory on January 7th, 1979, the Cambodian people would not enjoy that good life today.
Both host and guest expressed their delight at good outcomes in bilateral friendly relations and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries over the past years, which brought practical benefits to the two peoples. They affirmed to continue cementing bilateral relations and cooperation in the future. The two leaders also committed to fully realize commitments to contribute to peace, stability and development in the region and the world, and to facilitate high-level visits, people-to-people exchange and education for young generations of the two countries on the traditional friendship and mutual support so that young people of the two countries will further foster the Vietnam-Cambodia bilateral relationship in the future.
They also agreed to direct their ministries and agencies to work closely together to fine-tune relevant mechanisms and agreements to push forward trade, investment, economic connectivity, education-training, and tourism.The two sides also vowed to consider measures to raise bilateral trade to USD 5 billion, including the signing of an agreement on double taxation avoidance and building of a program to connect the two economies, especially cross-border economic development.
President Tran Dai Quang thanked Prime Minister Hun Sen for his government’s sound policies to support the Vietnamese nationals in the country. He wished that the Cambodian Prime Minister and Government will continue to help overseas Vietnamese in the country overcome their difficulties in life and contribute more to the local communities as well as to traditional friendship between the two countries.
Discussing regional and global issues of shared concern, the two sides agreed to continue coordinating closely at multilateral forums to which they are members; supporting and speeding up peaceful settlement for regional and global disputes; and working with each other and with other Mekong River Commission members to ensure the sustainable management and use of water resources in the Mekong River.
President Tran Dai Quang also invited the Cambodian Prime Minister and other leaders to Vietnam for official visits and tours. The Cambodian Prime Minister happily accepted the invitation and pledged to organize visits to Vietnam at appropriate times.
Earlier on the morning of June 15th, President Tran Dai Quang, his spouse and the high-ranking delegation laid wreaths at the Freedom Monument, the King Norodom Sihanouk Monument and Memorial of Fallen Vietnamese Volunteer Soldiers in Cambodia.
