Standing in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on Friday, President Obama invoked the “silent cry” of all of those killed by the first nuclear weapon ever dropped in war. While he properly never contemplated an apology for a necessary military action, Obama also said, “The memory of the morning of Aug. 6, 1945, must never fade. . . . It fuels our moral imagination. It allows us to change.” He urged the world to “have the courage to escape the logic of fear and pursue a world without” nuclear weapons, a cause that he has long championed. His words mattered, and so did the powerful symbolism of embracing a Hiroshima survivor. But action matters more. America’s emoter in chief is also the country’s commander in chief, a role in which he allowed that “we may not realize this goal in my lifetime.” Because in the right hands, nuclear weapons are a powerful deterrent against rogue nations. Which is why Obama has pushed to rebuild the entire U.S. nuclear arsenal — including warheads and the submarines, planes and missiles that carry them — at an estimated $1 trillion over 30 years. Money well spent to prevent another Hiroshima.
