How to file a complaint on Apple’s FaceTime bug in New York

Jon Campbell Albany Bureau Published 4:40 PM EST Jan 30, 2019 ALBANY – New York has launched an investigation into Apple’s handling of a bug that allowed callers to eavesdrop on other users while using the FaceTime function on the company’s devices. Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state Attorney General Letitia James announced the joint probe on Wednesday, two days after the discovered bug went viral. As part of the investigation, the state is accepting complaints through a Department of State hotline at 1-800-697-1220. The investigation will consider whether Apple’s handling of the situation violated any of the state’s consumer protection laws, according to Cuomo and James. “My office will be conducting a thorough investigation into Apple’s response to the situation, and will evaluate the company’s actions in relation to the laws set forth by the State of New York,” James said in a statement. The bug allowed users to listen in on other users’ phones by using the “Add Person” feature while dialing someone on FaceTime. If the caller chose their own number in the “Add Person” screen, it would automatically open the microphone on the other person’s device, allowing the caller to hear them before they actually answered.
