JUPITER, Fla. – Amid the ongoing steroids furor in baseball, Tony La Russa, who has unhappily been caught up in the middle of it thanks to accusations from his former American League MVP, Jose Canseco, said recently that baseball should have “zero tolerance” for players who have cheated the game.This was in response to La Russa being asked what he thought of Alex Rodriguez’s admission that he used illegal performance enhancing drugs from 2001-03. By “zero tolerance” it was assumed La Russa meant “throw the book at ’em” and, by extension, deny them the Hall of Fame. Yet, the St. Louis Cardinals manager remains in his state of denial when it comes to Mark McGwire, who played for him in Oakland and St. Louis, and is widely believed to have been doing steroids when he broke Roger Maris’ longstanding season home run record in 1998. In this case, La Russa is a bit of a paradox. No one in baseball over the last 20 years has been more fervent about respecting the game.
