HCM City hosts global music fest

HCM CITY — Several concerts featuring the contemporary music of Viet Nam, the US, Turkey and the Philippines will be staged at the HCM City Conservatory of Music this week.
Featured on three nights, from September 26-28, will be symphonies and chamber music composed by Gary Powell Nash and Dirk Johan Stromberg from the US, Kamran Ince of Turkey and Jonas Baes of the Philippines.
The compositions of Vietnamese musicians, including Do Hong Quan, president of Viet Nam Musicians Association, and Tran Thanh Ha, who teaches at the HCM City Conservatory, will also be featured.
HCM City music teachers and students of the Conservatory Music will perform the contemporary pieces.
“Music lovers will have opportunities to know more about the diversity of contemporary music of many countries,” musician Hoang Hiep, director of the city Conservatory’s Performing Department, said.
The musicians have already arrived in the city for various activities at the Conservatory of Music, including talks with local musicians and students.
These events will start on Saturday with a display of musical instruments of Viet Nam and other countries.
The Wednesday concert will feature pieces written by young musicians who are attending music institutes in the US, Turkey, the Philippines and Viet Nam.
Music by Nash, Stromberg, Ince and Baes will be performed on the two following nights.
These composers now teach music composition and theory at universities in the US, Turkey and the Philippines.
Nash’s works for orchestra, band, choir and chamber have been performed in the US and around the world, including Canada, China and the Philippines.
Music by Stromberg who now teaches at Istanbul University in Turkey has been programmed on several radio stations throughout the US.
Jonas Baes from the Philippines is also an active ethnomusicologist and writer. His music has been performed in Asia, Europe and North America.
